CertLister vs Credly: Which Digital Credential Platform Is Right for You?
If you're evaluating digital credential platforms, Credly is probably on your list. It's the largest platform in the space, used by 4,000+ organizations and backed by Pearson. The name carries weight.
But "biggest" and "best for your organization" are not the same thing. Credly is explicitly built for enterprise-scale credential programs — and if that's not what you're running, the pricing structure, onboarding process, and product assumptions may not fit.
This comparison is for organizations that are actively choosing between the two platforms. We've covered Credly's genuine strengths honestly, because a comparison that ignores what the other platform does well isn't useful to anyone making a real decision.
The Short Version
If you need a sentence each:
Credly is the right choice if you're a large enterprise or well-known certification body issuing tens of thousands of credentials per year, where the recognition of the Credly network and enterprise LMS integrations are worth the price and the sales process.
CertLister is the right choice if you're a training company, HR team, professional association, or growing organization that needs a full credential management platform — design, issue, track, verify, and automate — at a predictable monthly price, without a sales call.
Pricing: The Biggest Difference
This is where the two platforms diverge most sharply.
Credly does not publish pricing on its website. You'll contact their sales team, go through a demo, and receive a custom quote. Based on third-party research, the pricing structure is volume-based — you pay per credential issued annually, plus a mandatory onboarding fee on top:
| Credentials/year | Reported annual cost | Onboarding fee |
|---|---|---|
| 500 | ~$3,000 | ~$500 |
| 1,000 | ~$5,000 | ~$1,000 |
| 2,500 | ~$8,500 | ~$1,000 |
| 5,000 | ~$11,000 | ~$1,000 |
| 10,000 | ~$20,000 | ~$5,000 |
Note: these figures are from third-party sources, as Credly does not publish official pricing. Contact Credly directly for an accurate quote.
Unused credentials within a contract year expire — they do not roll over. There is no free plan and no free trial.
CertLister publishes its pricing openly:
| Plan | Price | Credentials |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0/month | 50 |
| Basic | $19/month ($15/month billed annually) | 1,000 |
| Pro | $49/month ($39/month billed annually) | Unlimited |
No onboarding fees. No sales call. Start on the free plan immediately, upgrade when you're ready. The price is the same regardless of how many credentials you issue on the Pro plan.
For an organization issuing 1,000 credentials per year, the annual cost difference is approximately $4,400 vs $228. For 5,000 credentials, it's approximately $11,000 vs $588.

What Credly Does Well
It's worth being direct about where Credly has genuine advantages.
Network and discoverability. Credly's earner network has 48M+ profiles. When a recipient earns a credential through Credly, it's discoverable by employers within that network. If your program issues AWS certifications, Google Cloud credentials, or other widely recognized industry certifications, the Credly brand itself carries recognition that a white-label platform cannot replicate.
Enterprise integrations. If your organization runs learning on Skilljar, Bridge, Degreed, or Edcast, Credly has direct integrations with those platforms. For a large L&D team running a managed learning ecosystem, this integration story is compelling.
Scale and security. Credly is ISO 27001 and ISO 27701 certified. For organizations in regulated industries with strict procurement requirements, those certifications matter. At 110M+ credentials issued, the platform is proven at large scale.
REST API. Credly offers a full REST API for organizations that want to build custom credential issuance into their own systems. If you have engineering resources and a complex existing workflow, this matters.
What CertLister Does Differently
CertLister is built around a different assumption: that most organizations issuing credentials need more than a badge platform, at a price that doesn't require budget approval and a sales cycle.
Full credential lifecycle — not just badges. Most of CertLister's customers issue branded PDF credentials alongside or instead of digital badges. The platform handles the full lifecycle: design (drag-and-drop Design Studio), issue (CSV import, Google Sheets, or one at a time), track (expiry dates, status, compliance records), verify (public portal), and automate (workflow automations). Credly is primarily a badge issuance and sharing platform — expiry tracking, compliance records, and bulk PDF generation are not features it offers.
Predictable, flat pricing. You don't have to estimate how many credentials you'll issue next year and sign a contract around that estimate. CertLister's Pro plan is $49/month regardless of volume. If you issue 100 credentials one month and 2,000 the next, the price doesn't change.
No sales process. You can create an account, start a 14-day free trial, and issue your first credential in under 10 minutes. No demo, no procurement cycle.
Recipients don't need an account. Credly requires earners to create a Credly account to receive their badge. CertLister's verify page is public — anyone can verify a credential by credential number or name without logging in to anything, and recipients receive a direct link to their credential.
White-label. On CertLister's Pro plan, you can remove all CertLister branding from the verify page and outbound emails. Your recipients interact with your brand, not ours. Credly does not offer white-label options.
Expiry tracking and compliance. If your organization needs to track which certifications are current, which are expiring in 30 days, and which have lapsed — that's a core CertLister feature, not an add-on. You get automatic status changes, multi-step expiry reminder emails to recipients, and compliance-ready filtered exports. Credly does not have expiry tracking.
Who Should Choose Credly
- You're a major certification body (AWS, Google Cloud, CompTIA, etc.) where the Credly network brand recognition matters to earners
- Your organization issues 50,000+ credentials per year and needs enterprise SLA, ISO 27001 compliance, and dedicated account management
- Your L&D team runs on Skilljar, Degreed, or Edcast and needs native integration with those platforms
- You have engineering resources to implement a REST API workflow
- You need SAML-based SSO for enterprise identity management
Who Should Choose CertLister
- You're a training company, professional association, HR team, or online educator who needs a complete credential management platform — not just a badge tool
- You issue PDF credentials, wallet cards, or digital badges (or all three) and want one platform for all formats
- You need expiry tracking, automatic reminders, and compliance-ready records
- You want predictable pricing without a sales call or annual contract commitment
- You need a public verification portal that works without requiring recipients to create an account
- You want a full design studio to create branded credentials that look exactly the way you want
- You're switching from spreadsheets or a basic tool and need CSV import, bulk generation, and workflow automation
The Bottom Line
Credly built the dominant enterprise credential network, and for organizations where network recognition and enterprise integrations are the primary requirements, it's a defensible choice.
For everyone else — training companies managing cohorts, HR departments tracking employee certifications, professional associations issuing CPD credentials, online course creators sending completion credentials — CertLister covers more of the credential lifecycle at a fraction of the cost, without requiring a sales process to get started.
The free plan makes it easy to verify that. Create an account, import your existing records via CSV, set up your verification portal, and see how it fits — before you've spent anything.
